NEWS & VIEWS

INTO THE FLOW!! Having just returned from Florida this third week of April, I am anxious to get back into the flow of things in the North. Thanks to all that takes charge and keeps our club running smoothly. Since becoming President some 10 or 11 years ago, I have always made it a priority to do the best I can in regards to the workings of our club. It is a great peace of mind to know everything works well and is in good hands during my absence. Some might get the feeling they are really not needed anymore. I am happy to say I am not one of those and am glad for the help and the knowledge that everything is in very capable hands. In my forth year of retirement from the work force, I am finding more and more ways of using that precious commodity called time. Mostly traveling, being in the warm south and I am very active in the Patriot Guard and Rolling Thunder. These are veterans groups and are very active in veteran’s rights, health issues and doing escorts at the funerals of our Fallen Heroes of the present war on terrorism. Of course, as most of you know, my Harley plays an integral part in all of these. I do love to ride and love to swing that coil, I am working on putting the two together. I plan to do all I can to help keep our club at its best and am very Thankful to all that help me in that endeavor, both when I am here and during the frequent times I am not. I also want to Thank each and every member for your understanding and your willingness to accept some of the changes that must be made to keep our club vibrant and strong. Having missed the first two meetings this year, a lot has happened as we move forward.

I especially want to Thank all the new members that have joined and I am looking forward to meeting each of you as well as seeing everyone that attends our club meetings and functions. I always feel more like it’s a reunion of friends as each New Year begins. The inflated price of silver has certainly become a major stumbling block in many clubs ways of holding hunts and using silver coins as awards etc. Many clubs have given up having hunts at all. The FMDAC has gone to one convention per year with the cost of silver, being the main contributing factor. I know this issue has been dealt with by our club for this year but is something that is not going to get any better, and sadly to say, probably it will only get worse. I ask for your ideas on this matter as well as your understanding in what ever our club must do to compromise. Rest assured each member’s input, wants and your needs will always be considered in whatever decisions need to be made to keep our club afloat and running smoothly as possible.

Well, warm weather is finally here, what a beautiful time of year in the north. I hope everyone can get out and take advantage as much as possible. The next month or two are the best and most optimum conditions both soil and growth wise, so swing that coil whenever you can. Good hunting and Best of Health to All.

              THOUGHT

My your next find be the best find,

Be the best find of your life.

Best Wishes & God Bless,

  Jack Barrett

Brown Bag Hunt

There was a brown bag Hunt held at the fair grounds in Dayton, Pa. This is an old site which had over one hundred years of fairs and events.

Six members showed up to hunt and they enjoyed their day.

After some morning rain they hit the fields and but it seems that they only found clad coins.

Harry Bowser found a 1956 silver dime. I understand this was his first ever silver dime. Congratulations

POISON

It is now the height of the Poison Ivy season. I have been hunting the woods a lot this spring and have noticed that there seems to be an abundance of Poison Ivy this year.

Spring leaves

Like many spring leaves, poison ivy leaves start out bright red, which seems to fend off insects.

Summer leaves

Some leaves are notched, Some leaves are not.

New leaves are shiny and still somewhat reddish. Older leaves are duller.

Poison Ivy At The Beach

When Poison Ivy grows near the ocean it tends to have curly, waxy looking leaves.

A day at the beach could result in weeks of agony if you don't realize that poison ivy grows - often in huge lush stands - at the beach.

The one good thing about poison ivy at the beach is that it seems to do a good job of holding the beach together against erosion. It keeps people away, which always

makes the local wildlife much happier.

It's almost impossible to get rid of it, since the roots are very well established under the ground. You can rip it out, but you almost never get it all, and it comes back with an attitude.

SPECIAL NOTICE

March 21, 2008

Membership,

With the sky rocketing fuel prices, $3.39, here in southwestern Pennsylvania and the ridiculous prices that silver is bringing, the FMDAC Board of Directors had to make a tough decision.

Over the past few months only a few entries were received for the upcoming convention in Antlers, Oklahoma and this brought many questions to mind. I was able to talk to many of our regular convention attendees about coming to the convention and they informed me that because of both of these reasons they had to make choices and driving 1000 miles was out of the question. I figured that many people are feeling the crunch, which in turn is probably the reason for the low response.

So with all things in mind we decided to cancel the spring convention for this year and focus our efforts to this fall. This was a tough decision and everything and everyone was taken into consideration before this decision was made. I hope that our decision doesn’t create hard feelings towards the organization, but when this decision was made we had the best for the organization in mind.

I’m sorry that this had to be done but I feel that with the economy going south, all our clubs will be feeling the effects. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions and we will keep everyone posted about any upcoming events.  People who had sent in their reservations will be refunded their money.

Thanks

Duane Biller
