SPRING IS HERE !! Spring, to me the best time of year to detect, especially those old foundations or areas where weeds, briars etc. make it hard to get into most times of the year. Spring brings soft moist soil, which enhances the ability for most detectors to perform closer to what the manufacturers say them can. Also, foliage is at a minimum which allows access to areas that often are unreachable but this window will pass quickly so if you have these areas on your list to search, they should get your highest priority. Cooler temperatures prevail in the spring seasons which add to making this time of year so great for our hobby. I do hope each of you can find the time to take advantage of this Spring season and get out often.
I returned to Pa. on April 21, rode my bike the total of 1100 miles plus. Wanted to get back a week earlier but the weather up this way would not allow it. Had a pleasant stop in Georgia to visit my sons, John & Andy, & actually, had to stay a few extra days there till the snow stopped here. For those of you that often ask, Andy is off active duty and is in reserves for the next three years and is doing well. He certainly has the chance of going active at any time but as of now, his unit is on the back burner for going to Iraq. He is working in the landscaping business at the present time.
As you know, Florida is called the Sunshine State. For those of you that have been there, I am sure you understand as I do why it has that name. Fact: On average, the sun shines in Florida 358 days out of the year. In my 3 years of going there, I can only remember two days it did not shine and one was the tail end of a Hurricane.
I came back North to sunny, mid seventies weather, simply beautiful but as I write this, it has been chilly and dreary for three consecutive days and the forecast promises several more damp dreary days. As a song lyric by John Denver says:” Sunshine on my shoulders, makes me happy”. I am a sunshine person. My favorite time of day is a bright sunny morning, seems to brighten the spirits and gets you ready for most anything. I am often asked if I miss the snow while in Florida, my answer is, not really, I have a good memory.
I will say I am glad to be back, especially with summer approaching and am looking forward to seeing everyone again and some of the best detecting and great finds are found in good old Pennsylvania. With that said, hope to see you all at the May 17 meeting and if Terry will allow, maybe I can try my hand at being President again. I do want to say Thanks to Terry, Jim, Greg, Harry, Boobie, Vic and everyone else that keeps our club running smoothly, whether I am around or not. It is a comforting thought to know our club is in such good hands. Whatever my standing in the club and the future holds, The Butler County Treasure Hunters and its members will always be a special part of me and a part I can not imagine being without. See ya in May, Best of health to all, and may your finds be plentiful and rewarding.

Moraine State Park
There was a nice turnout for the Moraine State Park project on April 29th. The GEO Cachers went out into the fields and located many park boundary markers that day. We were called whenever they could not locate a marker. We located several and we also verified that some markers were not accessible or had been removed. When we finished for the day we were invited to share in a wonderful buffet style spread of food, cookies, cakes, hot & cold drinks. We wish to thank both Joy Bray and Tom Baumgardner, volunteers from Moraine State Park, for asking our club to come and volunteer to assist the GEO Cashers to locate boundary markers. This was an excellent means for us to promote our club and hobby.
Annual Spring Hunt
The Clubs annual spring hunt is tentatively set for June 16, 2007. Please look around and see what you can find to donate to the clubs Spring Hunt.
Terry will be signing up people who will be attending the spring hunt at this May meeting.
Lets not forget Terry’s Annual Free Hunt held up on the hill, in the woods. It will start after the Spring Hunt and lunch break. Terry’s Annual free Hunt is something that Terry enjoys doing for the club.
We know this is a little early to think about donations, but finding things to donate seems to become harder every year. It should be anything made of metal or a token prize. You can bring the donations for the club Spring Hunt and for Terry’s hunt to the May meeting or to the hunts.

Just rambling
I know two nuts that went water detecting last week. Boobie and I thought we would find a few leftovers from last year. Our problem was that the water surface air temperature that day was 40 degrees and the breeze across the surface made it feel like 30 degrees and quite chilly. We lasted about 1 ˝ hours and had to get out. The beach and grass areas were a bit warmer but there were only a few pennies there also. It seems that we did a good job of cleaning out the water holes at the closing of the season last year.
I will be driving the length of the Pennsylvania turnpike next week and I was wondering if anyone metal detects the rest stops. I really was thinking about the ones where you just pull off along the road. The old Howard Johnson’s are mostly all concrete and blacktop now.
Here is a link to some of the turnpike history that I found while cruising the internet.
