AWARDS !! Once again, it was my pleasure to present our annual awards at the November meeting. Congratulations to our Treasure Hunter of the Year, Perry Smyda, Coin Shooter of the year, Joe Novosat and to Terry Taylor for being awarded Find of the Year by the votes tallied from all the members present. Terry’s 14K, 45 Diamond ring received the most votes by over half of those that voted. Congratulations to all the runner ups in each category as well as all that were awarded a silver half dollar for having at least four displays throughout the year. It has truly been an awesome year once again for the finds our members keep unearthing. Thanks to all that bring your finds and display them each month. The amount of quality finds our members show each month are proof that with some time, effort and a little research, there is still much still to be found out there. Oh, dare I say a little luck is helpful also. Thanks to Steve Dodin for the captivating slide presentation on Hobo Nickels. It was amazing to see the detail and the skill required to make the examples shown. Although not a lost art, each artist had his own unique style in making these hand carved beauties, which make the originals virtually impossible to duplicate. Dating from the early 1900’s, and through the 1940’s, it was nice to know that this art form continues today and that the memory of the original artists and their amazing works will not be forgotten, being kept alive by enthusiasts like Steve and his peers. I would be remiss if I did not mention the generosity of Steve and his donations of various nostalgic items which he offered those present via a silent auction with all proceeds going to Terry’s free hunt to be held with the 2008 Spring Hunt. THANKS AGAIN STEVE!!
The FMDAC Convention on November 2, 3 & 4 was a very memorable event to attend. The guest speakers and seminars were exceptional. Our own Steve Dodin gave a great presentation on Punch- out Coins and Hobo Nickels.
Steve had a great array of examples and his knowledge on the subject was impressive. Phil Doyle, a former member and local resident, gave a candid and humorous presentation on various axes and cutting type tools used for most everything from cutting ice to wood. The numerous examples he had was amazing, some dating as far back as the 1600’s. Then, Diane Bandy, a Dog License collector and expert, gave a captivating talk and showed hundreds of examples dating back to the mid 1800’s. Most of us have found many of these and many have a collectable value. The Banquet was a great evening with our club being presented a plaque from FMDAC President, Duane Biller in appreciation of our club being the host club for the convention and the work our club did in helping to make this event a success. Thanks to all that manned our table, brought displays of finds to be shown and helped in seeding the hunt fields.
The seeded hunts were a lot of fun, well planned and done on a wooded hillside which was a nice challenge and made the recovery of the targets last a little longer, slowing down even the most expert hunters a bit.
A special Thanks to club members, Jackie & Donna Walker for allowing the use of their property for the various hunts. The concession stand they provided with hot food and snacks was a welcome addition enjoyed by everyone. All proceeds went to help finance the needs of their search and rescue dogs. Many generous donations were also made for this humanitarian and worthy cause. Everyone that attended this convention, seemed to have a great time as smiles abounded everywhere. A job well done by the FMDAC, our club and all that helped or were able to attend.
Hope to see everyone at our Christmas meeting and annual party on Dec. 20. The gold coin drawing will be held along with us all eating together in the meeting room. Food will be cooked to order by Family Bowl-Away which will also be providing and donating the refreshments. Everyone is encouraged to bring your favorite Christmas snack and a donation for the door prize drawings. This will be a very informal meeting with plenty of fun and time for socializing. We encourage you to bring family members and friends as well and oh yes, please bring along your Christmas Spirit. Until then, be safe, good health to all and have a very Joyous Holiday Season.
